Let Me Tell You About Webcomics: A New Postmodern Genre
by Paige Gelsimino
Spiddrelli challenges the notions of good vs. evil. So far in the story it’s very confused as to who is on the “good side” and who is on the “evil side.” While Robin towards the beginning seems like he would evolve into the villain of the story, as it continues the reader sees that things aren’t so simple, for any of the characters. There is no specific evil or obstacle they need to overcome yet. The only clue the reader has is during the prologue where a detective muses about his cold case he’s recently been put on about a missing child, the only clue being a folder with the word “Spiddrelli” on it and several green film squares that he begins watching to figure out the mystery, which is the webcomic, Spiddrelli. It is definitely set as a mystery, leaving the reader wondering how it all fits together, while leaving out the end goal. Is it just solving the cold case? Or is it something completely different? At the moment there is no villain or true end goal, which normally might make the story seem like its missing something, but not with Spiddrelli. It is a normal course for the webcomic to take and doesn’t make it seem lacking.
